  1. Network technology matched to your route. Overlay your route on mobile coverage maps. Continuous coverage: multi-carrier GSM is enough. Dead zones in the remote sectors: you need satellite (Iridium or Globalstar networks) or a hybrid beacon that switches over automatically when GSM disappears.
  2. Transmission frequency. One position per minute is the minimum for a smooth map and a responsive race control. Also check the actual frequency in satellite mode: some plans space the points out to five or ten minutes, which changes everything when you have to find a vehicle.
  3. Battery life and power hookup. The battery must cover your longest stage with a comfortable margin: the wait at the start, liaison sections, the unexpected. On 4x4s and SSVs, wiring the beacon to the vehicle’s power with an internal backup battery is the safest configuration.
