Every category in a raid needs the same thing: a reliable position flowing to race control, automatic alerts and an SOS that works. Yet a GPS tracker for a raid that lives quietly on a 4x4 dashboard can die in a single stage strapped to a motorbike. Power supply, mounting, exposure to impacts and dust: here is what changes from one vehicle to the next, seen from the organizer’s side.
The need every category shares
Whatever the vehicle, a GPS tracker for a raid must give the organization four things:
- A continuous position toward race control, at regular intervals, over the whole route.
- Automatic alerts: speeding, low battery, SOS signal.
- Enough battery life to cover the longest stage with margin.
- Mounting that survives the terrain, from tarmac liaisons to broken tracks.

In a 4x4: the comfort of permanent power
The 4x4 is the easiest vehicle to equip with a GPS tracker for a raid. The unit wires into the vehicle’s 12 V system, so battery life stops being a question and the transmission frequency can be high with no trade-off. A position every 10 or 20 seconds is no problem when the vehicle powers the tracker at all times.
Space changes the picture too. An external antenna can sit on the roof or the roof rack for better reception, and the unit itself finds a sheltered spot in the cabin or on the roll cage, away from stones and direct hits.
One last advantage: redundancy costs almost nothing. For key vehicles (course opener, race direction, medical), adding a second backup tracker is straightforward. There is room and power for two.
On a motorbike: the most demanding case
On a motorbike, everything that made life easy in a 4x4 disappears. There is no room and little spare electrical power: most raid bikes cannot feed an extra unit without weakening something else. A motorbike GPS tracker therefore usually runs on its own battery, and battery life becomes the number one sizing criterion: the unit has to last the longest stage, with margin.
The housing itself must be compact and reinforced. Falls are part of riding a raid, and the tracker has to survive them. Mounting goes on the frame or the handlebar, away from exhaust heat, which can damage the unit or degrade its battery.
Two details matter more here than anywhere else. The SOS button must stay reachable with gloves on, without taking both hands off the bars. And at 5 am at the stage start, a tired rider forgets things: the fewer actions the setup demands from the crew (switching on, checking, recharging), the more reliable it will be over the length of the raid.
In an SSV: vibration and dust
The SSV combines constraints from both worlds. The open cockpit exposes the unit to dust during the stage and to pressure washing at the bivouac: sealing and protected connectors are not optional.
Mechanically, the vibration of an SSV on a broken track is severe. It argues for a rigid bracket mounted on the chassis and strain-relieved wiring: a wire stretched between two vibrating points eventually snaps.
Power, on the other hand, is available as on a 4x4: the vehicle’s 12 V can feed the tracker permanently, provided the wiring is protected along its whole run (sleeving, cable ties, routing away from hot spots).

A multi-category raid: one model or one per category?
If your raid mixes 4x4s, motorbikes and SSVs, the question comes up: a single beacon model for the whole field, or dedicated hardware per category? Adaptation then happens in the settings rather than in the hardware: the transmission frequency can be tuned per category, higher for fast vehicles and speed-control zones, more conservative on motorbikes to preserve the battery.
One point that is often forgotten: assistance and organization vehicles should be tracked too. The medical car, the sweep truck and the press vehicle cross the same remote areas as the competitors, and race control needs to see them on the same map to coordinate a response.
