Why online navigation doesn’t survive a rally raid
Consumer map apps stream their content: every screen of map is downloaded the moment you look at it. As long as the phone has data, all is well. The moment data disappears, the map collapses into grey squares with a blue dot floating in the void.
A raid route, by design, hunts for remote sectors: plateau tracks, dune belts, wadis, mountain passes. Carrier coverage maps stop at the edge of towns and main roads, exactly where your special stage begins. Relying on online navigation means accepting that guidance drops out at the precise moment crews need it most.
The conclusion is unavoidable: everything the crew needs to navigate must be on board the device before the stage start.
How offline navigation works
Offline GPS navigation rests on two independent building blocks, and that separation is what makes it dependable.
Positioning first. A smartphone’s GPS chip only listens to satellites (GPS, Galileo, GLONASS). It transmits nothing, uses no mobile data and works anywhere on the planet, from the bivouac to the middle of the erg. Airplane mode does not disable it: a phone with no SIM card still knows its position to within a few meters.
Cartography second. This is the part that needs preparation: the base maps must be downloaded in advance and stored locally on the device. Once in memory, they display instantly, network or not.
Add the third piece, the event’s digital roadbook: the stage routes and waypoints published by the organization, stored inside the app. The crew then has complete navigation, position, map and route, with zero network.

Both layers are needed, and neither replaces the other: a well-guided crew can still break down in a remote sector, and a beacon will never tell the co-driver where to turn.

Good habits to pass on to your crews
At the briefing, five instructions are enough to eliminate almost every navigation incident:
- Download the maps at the bivouac or on the hotel wifi the evening before, never on the start line.
- Carry a power bank and a proper phone mount: a screen that stays on all day is prepared like any other part of the vehicle.
- Use dark mode: full brightness is the biggest single drain on the battery.
- Check the evening before that the app opens and the next day’s stage is loaded.
- Know the difference between losing network and losing GPS. The first is normal and changes nothing for navigation. The second is rare: check that the phone can see the sky and that the mount is not blocking the antenna.
